Another week, another pile of comics.
First off, we got Countdown #51 hitting the shelves. This is DC’s newest weekly series, and don’t let the number fool you - it’s the first issue. The issue numbering runs backwards (get it? Countdown?). I’m a little miffed about some of the problems 52 faced - namely cramming too many stories into the comic. Hopefully, DC’s learned for its mistake. Paul Dini is the “head writer”, but the solicitation mentions a rotating cast of both artist and writers tackling the weekly run. And what character’s death sets off the “Countdown”? I can’t wait to find out.
I’d also like to mention Vertigo’s DMZ, which releases its 19th issue this week. I’ve been a bit too broke to follow the near-future political thriller as much as I should have, but I definitely want to recommend it. Imagine “Escape from New York” with a Tom Clancy-style twist and turn combined with modern day parallels. Its a great book, and not to be missed.
One graphic novel I’ll be definitely picking up this week is Neil Gaiman’s Eternals. With Gaiman’s timeless approach to a world beneath our noses, Eternals was most likely pushed off the radar due to Civil War. Still, I read the first issue and I really liked what I saw. Hopefully this book can compete to Gaiman’s previous hit, 1602.
We’ve also got the latest issue of New Avengers hitting the stands today. This Bendis-penned masterpiece had a group of Avengers outlawed by Civil War going to toe-to-toe with the Hand and their new leader, Elecktra. This issue promises to reveal the identity of the Ronin (no, its not Echo), a mysterious masked member on the team.
And if you like brain-chomping, you might want to check out Marvel Zombies: Dead Days, which serves as prequel to the insanely gory alternate reality apocalypse. Things definitely don’t look well for Jarvis as some of his buddies in the Avengers turn into flesh-eating monsters!
Oh, and Nova #2 also hits the stand. I just picked up the first issue last week, and it really succeeded in fleshing out this former New Warriors stable. Nova has been saving the galaxy for the past couple of months, and when he comes home, he finds his super-powered friends locked in conflict as well as Iron Man and Penance (formerly Speedball) demanding he submit to registration! The online preview looked astounding. This is one book you don’t want to miss!
