    Comic Book Rundown 05/23/07
Posted by Richard Pulfer on May 22nd, 2007

Hot off the menu, Birds of Prey #106 looks mighty tasty as Gail Simone matches up the two teams she’s built to the top - Oracle’s titular Birds against in-between supervillains the Secret Six! If you haven’t read a Simone book, now’s the time before she takes over Wonder Woman in a couple month!

Zauriel shows up in Shadowpact #13 - though no indication on whose side he’s on. Given the breakout surprise of this team as of late, this should be a scene worth watching.

On the Marvel side we got Captain American #26, which continues a brand-new story arc, WITHOUT Captain America, who died at the end of Civil War! The comic now follows Winter Soldier, Falcon and Sharon Carter (who unwillingly plugged Cap while mind-controlled by Dr. Faustus) in the aftermath of the hero’s death.

You might also want to pick up Marvel: Magic Handbook #1. Marvel seems to be finally laying out its magical characters much in the way DC did in Neil Gaiman’s Books of Magic - in one giant storyline. I, for one, couldn’t be happier - but I have some brushing up to do and this is the book to use.

New Avengers: Illuminati #3 follows the Who’s Who of the Marvel Universe - the same team of brillant geniuses that kicked off Civil War - as they bicker and fight through the generations. This issue deals with the team fighting off the influence of Secret War’s Beyonder, and given Reed Richard’s own brush with omnipotence in the mini-series, the results should be interesting.

And finally, there’s X-Men #199, which features a very creepy (and Marvel Zombie-looking) Rogue on the cover. With apparently both Rogue and Cable making deals with the devil, this conclusion looks like one for the books - especially with “Endangered Species” on the horizon!
