| Old people are funny, especially when they’re all ex-superheroes and villains. Brock Heasley puts a gaggle of cantankerous cranks from the golden age of superheroics into a massive retirement home that both nurtures and oppresses them. Case in point - Spy Girl, who only infiltrates the home to combat a villain that actually passed away two weeks prior, is outfitted with a wristcuff that prevents her from using her phasing powers, thus preventing her escape. Don’t get me started on the flying pig with knock-out piss; that one’s a bit harder to explain.
Story-wise, this is funny stuff. The aforementioned infiltration by Spy Girl is the first storyarc, and it does reel you in. Heasley’s quick, witty humor really does give the impression that all these once-mighty characters have their own little community where they’ve mostly abandoned the old hatreds. There’s a few exceptions such as the downright creepy Dr. Rocket, an ex-villian with bizarre love habits. The art’s good, consistent, and plesant on the eyes. Heasly uses a softer palette that lends itself nicely to the light-hearted tone. The character designs, while based on common archtypes, are unique enough to both remind you of certain familiar comic characters and not come off as parody or derivative. That’s a hard balancing act to pull off, and I think Heasly does it well. The link below is for the first comic. Since it’s hosted on Pixelstrips, SuperFogeys suffers from a crappy navigation system. But, hey, where’s a better place to start than from the beginning? http://pixelstrips.com/Archive/detail.aspx?ComicID=71&StripID=962 |

This review captures the comic dead on! If you like the space-pig you’ll LOVE Swifty….the grumpy old guy with the walker. I can’t wait to meet the other residents! It’s every superhero’s worst nightmare and dream come true…rolled into one fabulous retirement home!
