The Thinking Ape Blues by Mark Poutenis
Posted by Sean C on Feb 27th, 2007

This is by no means a new comic, but it most certainly has gone underappreciated. Poutenis writes sharp, witty dialogue commenting on life and society using a perpetually nude caveman; a semi-classy robot; and a crass, covetous gorilla. It’s an interesting group that creates some interesting situations, such as a dinner conversation with a hardcore christian woman. The cast clashes against the modern ideas lampooned, but not in a bad way. Somehow it works. When the gorilla takes a parent of an American Idol hopeful to task for parading his daughter around dressed like a teenage hooker, it’s great commentary. When he then asks the proud father how much she charges, then it’s comedy gold.

I originally found this one through The Valley Advocate, a local paper some of us liberal Massholes enjoy, and was thrilled when I discovered Poutenis had site for his work, which is now over 300 strips. You’ll be reading a while, but you’ll have trouble stopping. Mixing it up with crude humor, philosophy, and the occasional outrageous situation - just read the zombie James Brown strip - this is the rare comic that has a long life, and doesn’t go stale like so many others that have gone that far. My only gripe is the quirky navigation of the site. It’s not a deal-breaker, but it takes a couple seconds to get to the older stuff.

So if you think you can call yourself a comics fan, then you need to get familiar with this one. It’s well worth it. Give poor Mark Poutenis the attention he’s been fighting so hard for; his work most certainly deserves it.

Good call. Mark knows his stuff and his comic is really having its “coming out” party on the web this year.
