Plenty for Twenty: Devil May Cry 3

Everyone loves Dante. That trash-talking, gunslinging, fashion forward demon slayer whose daddy was a devil. Well, this installment of the Devil May Cry series offers more on his background and less on lame plot or way too open areas that allow you stand back and snipe your enemies from 300 yards away.

Before I get started with the review, let me just say that this game is a little tough at times. If you die three times the option for Easy Mode is unlocked so you can play the game without getting owned quite so badly and risk harming your gamer-cred among your fellow couch surfers. Which was so nice of Capcom, much nicer than just making the game a little easier for your average gamer…anyway, moving on.

The battle system in this game is your typical button-masher with a few combos thrown in for good measure. You spend your time running through areas, killing baddies, and collecting items that will allow you to continue on to the next phase of the game. You are able to interact with some of background objects (like the pole in the strip club) in the game.

One feature that sets this game apart is the addition of “Styles”. There are six different combat styles at your, and Dante’s, disposal. These styles use different techniques related to the styles focus. The styles and focus of each is as follows:

    1. Trickster: Dodging and Agility
    2. Swordmaster: Techniques for melee weapons
    3. Gunslinger: Techinques for firearms
    4. Royalguard: Absorbing and returning enemy attacks
    5. These two are unlocked during gameplay

    6. Quicksilver: Slow down time around you
    7. Doppelganger: Create a Shadow Double to help fight.

The story is pretty weak, and little gets explained, it seemed more like an after-thought to making the video game. That being said, the graphics and gameplay are very well planned out. Each “level”, for lack of a better term, is pretty detailed with tons of hidden areas.

The bosses in this game are tough, but not impossible, and after defeating each boss they provide you with different weapons that are added to your arsenal. Each of the new weapons comes with its own set of specialized attacks, all useful and all pretty deadly. In addition to specialized attacks, some puzzles will need specific weapons to solve them.

To wrap up this review, I say this one is a buy. Devil May Cry 3 is a property of Capcom and is available in the Special Edition in NEW condition for around $20 on EB Games & Gamestop.
