Plenty for Twenty: God of War
Posted by Migo on Jan 17th, 2007

With the release of God of War II only months away, I thought we should cover the game that made high-flying, action-packed, gore and nudity as commonplace as those annoying Mac commercials. That’s right, God of War.

Created by the nice people at Sony Computer Entertainment, this game blew me away the first time I played it. The cut scenes were beautifully rendered, the game mechanics quick-paced and sharp, and the story intriguing. This game has it all and then some.

This game puts you in the mind of a Spartan warrior, named Kratos, who has been serving the gods of ancient Greece and is now being called by Athena in order to kill her brother, Ares. So, you’re in control of this one-man war-machine as he travels through ancient greece in order to kill the god of war.

Mini-games in this game are a little different, as they’re used to finish off your enemies. There are different mini-games to finish off minotaurs, gorgons, banshees, and virtually anything else in the game. Each will be variety of monster will be dispatched in a different manner. The only problem I’ve come across is the analog stick directions at times. You’ll be told to make a half-circle and the game won’t recognize it when you do so.

While there are only a few weapons in this game, you have access to magical gifts bestowed upon you by the gods at your request as well. These gifts are plentiful and pack a punch as well. Magic and weapons both are able to be upgraded fairly easily.

There are puzzles in this game that require you think critically as well. Some of them are quite easy, while others will seem almost impossible at times. Most hang around the “intermediate” level, however.

Boss fights are tough, but not so tough that they keep the game from being fun. The battle system is robust as well, with plenty of “special moves” to choose from and execute. These moves will leave all enemies you come across chewing steel in your wake.

Sound effects and music in this game really help you lose yourself in the world that the game makers have created as well. The songs give you a feel of achieving something epic and the sound effects of your weapons connecting relay a real sense of power.

In general, this game blew me away and continues to blow me away. It’s one of those games I find myself playing again and again just because it’s so much fun.

I’m gonna have to go with Migo on this one since he got me into the game in the first place. The game has a truly epic scale which is rarely pulled off in the realm of console gaming. You really get into your role of Kratos. Though I will say that as intuitive that the controls were I did often find myself confused on what some of the special moves were. Some of them you’d just forget about and Zeus help you when you needed them.
