Today marks the launch of Microsoft’s new Windows OS, Vista, as well as the newest version of their popular Office suite.

Now, before you go out to grab the newest upgrade, you might want to read this. Anyone who is used to doing upgrades in Windows knows that probably the best way to do so is by doing a clean install. That means wiping the hardware clean and installing the OS from the ground up.

Well, if you buys an upgrade version and you plan on doing a clean install, forget it. Upgrade versions of Windows Vista Basic, Premium, and Starter Edition will not install on machines that do not have a pre-existing XP or 2000 installation already on the machine.

Vista isn’t without its giving side though. If you install Vista today, when you reconnect your machine to the internet you’ll be greeted by six updates that have been waiting just for you. These patches, according to Ars Technica are:

• KB930857: Install this update to fix an issue with Windows Error Reporting that may cause some information about application errors to be sent to Microsoft without notifying you. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer.
• KB928089: This update resolves a performance issue with the Internet Explorer Phishing Filter when visiting web pages that contain multiple frames or when multiple frame navigations occur quickly.
• KB929427: Install this update to address a set of known application compatibility issues with Windows Vista.
• KB929762: Install this update to resolve an issue which may cause the system to crash while resuming from hibernation while an IEEE 1394 hard drive is connected.
• KB931573: Install this update to resolve an issue where you may be prompted to activate a pre-installed copy of Windows Vista.
• KB929735: Install this update to resolve an issue that prevents Windows Search from returning a complete set of results when a search is performed using the date option and a non-Gregorian calendar is in use.

Ah yes, Windows Vista. The gift that keeps on giving.

(Keeps on giving spyware, viruses, DRM lockouts, enforced “upgrades,” and high blood pressure…)
