    Hockey Zombie Ends
Posted by Sean C on Jan 7th, 2007

The world is a little less rich now that Crun has ended Hockey Zombie, and appears to have “retired” from webcomicking. For those that don’t know what this little webcomic was, it was a wonderfully fun read that while full of crude humor and venom for a particular webcomicker (Cough - Tim Buckley - Cough), it was a very clever, thoughtful strip that hit on ideas that you would never consider, such as the droppings of zombies. It’s also one of the few stories I’ve read that actually addresses the origin of a zombie outbreak. (The main character was zombified getting out of the afterlife, got better - meaning alive - but became undead again after contracting the condition from intercourse with a zombie - Necrophilia kills, folks.)

Originally titled Car vs. Motorcycle, it began zombie-free, and was accompanied by Crun’s side comics - the uproarious Offensive Comic, An 80’s Cad, and Assbath; the latter two were brilliant stabs at Buckley. Crun was there for the RoMicide incident, and he knows the terrible, dirty truth about Tim Buckley. He loved to strike at the notorious jerk webcomicker, even going so far as to acquire (or closely reproducing) the templates to the CAD characters, and making them public, sparking a massive “Make Your Own CAD” hatefest that was hilarious each and every page.

After the RoM incident, CvM became a haven for the RoM refugees, and began to evolve into a more developed strip. Even though it would deviate from it’s main story often, Hockey Zombie updated so frequently that you would never be distracted for long. Crun improved the art, the writing got sharper, and when he re-christened the strip Hockey Zombie, it had become one of the most unpredictable, fun reads on the net. Honestly, he’s on the same level as Dr. McNinja when it comes to surprises. During all this time, Crun still kept his side comics going, and attracted a much larger audience. HZ became a favorite of the critics - it has previously been spotlighted on FLEEN, Comixpedia, and other sites. Crun leaves a lasting legacy, possibly having created the newest internet meme, “I’m a shark!”

If you have not read this comic, then go forth and discover the wonder that is Hockey Zombie. Read the archives and the side comics. Visit the forums and enjoy the random goodness; it’s still very much active.

Crun may not have been the medium’s James Brown, but it most certainly feels that we have lost one of the hardest working men in webcomics. HZ will be missed.

A shame, really. I’d just found it a couple of months ago and was starting to get into it, and then it blows away. Such is life. But hey, it was good while it lasted. I definitely enjoyed the genuine novelty of each and every strip. The elements of unpredictability and laugh-out-loud humor combined to make it a refreshing read in this world of ripoffs(*cough*CAD*cough*) and repeats.

The last strip kinda reminded me of the ending to This Comic Sucks. I suppose webcomic authors have this thing for killing off their main characters with a bang in the end. Sounds reasonable.
