    The Infestation Has Begun!
Posted by Migo on Dec 8th, 2006

Okay, I meant to post about this a month ago, but it totally slipped my mind. And since we’d had some pretty depressing news lately, I thought this would help lighten the mood back up.

While I was back in Athens Ohio my friends let me know that they had become involved in a city-wide game of zombies. Unfortunately, I came into town too late to get in on the fun, but it seemed like a blast. 600 people started the game, only 20 started as zombies and the rest were survivors. Survivors were to “kill” the zombies with Nerf weapons and balls of socks (sock bombs). The entire game was, according to the Athens News, coordinated via Facebook and started on Oct. 23.

Humans were marked by wearing bandannas on their arms, while zombies wore the bandannas on their heads. Once you had become a zombie, as we all know, there was no coming back. However, zombies that were killed would “respawn” in a designated period of time.

According to my sources, who were players in the game, the local Wal-Mart Supercenter had to restock their supply of Nerf weapons around four or five times, if not more, as they were being bought up as soon as they hit the shelves. City authorities had also been contacted and cleared the event as well. Even those in the town that weren’t involved with the game still seemed to enjoy watching those who were actively participating. This game had city-wide participation as well as city-wide support.

From chalk body outlines on the sidewalks reading “All zombies must die!”, to flyers looking for “survivors”, to certain “teams” keeping scoreboards of how many kills each member had achieved as a human and a zombie, the spirit of the game was friendly and fun. I’ve received an open invitation to join in on any upcoming games and would love to participate. While this does sound incredibly geeky, it also sounds like a blast. And, according to my friends/sources, it was a blast.
