Square-Enix Loves the DS: PSP Still Alone in its Room, Listening to Linkin Park
Posted by Shawn M. on Dec 12th, 2006

Square-Enix (or Squenix, as the cool kids say) is continuing its popular DragonQuest franchise on the Nintendo DS while ignoring Sony’s consoles. DragonQuest IX will follow up last year’s remarkably good DQXIII next year in Japan, and expect a US release later on. The game is being developed by Level-5, who developed DQVIII for the PS2. Another DQ game, “DQ Monsters: Joker” is in the works as well.

In addition to the DragonQuest series, Squenix is also developing a sequel to Final Fantasy XII for the DS, titled “FFXII: Revenant Wings“, “Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles - Ring of Fates, Heroes of Mana, as well as several non-RPG titles.

That must’ve been one heck of a make-up letter Nintendo sent to Squenix. Now, how long has the PSP been out?’ ‘Cause I need to remind myself how long I’ve not regretted buying one.

      So, wait a minute… DQ9 will be a DS game? That doesn’t sound right…

I know, but think about it — the DragonQuest series is Japan’s most popular game series, so much so that the government passed a law that DQ games could not be released on weekdays because so many people, prior to that law, skipped work and school that it played productivity havoc. The DS, on the otherhand, is the most popular console — not just handheld — in Japan. If the game were a PS3 exclusive, or a Wii exclusive, Squenix wouldn’t reach nearly as many as people because those systems don’t have the userbase (and probably never will) that the DS already has.

So, it’s actually a very smart move on Squenix’s part.
