Funny how the death-of-VHS article mentions Beta, LD, the original pay-to-play Divx, and even mini-discs as other “dead” home video formats… but neglects to even mention the CED (RCA “SelectaVision” videodisc) format. Despite being very popular - probably more so that Beta - in the early ’80s, it seems it truly is a forgotten medium today…
Of course, we all know the real reason why analog recording formats have died, and it’s nothing to do with audiovisual quality or even neglect… it’s because they are exempt from most digital copy protection. (See, DRM doesn’t do much good if you can just hook a tape deck up to your computer’s Line-Out and hit REC - not that I endorse such activity.) That’s gotta be the core reason for it; everything else is marketing.
