It’s time, really overdue, in fact, for another Talk Like a Gamer lesson. These two words are used quite often by gamers, as one might imagine, but not in the way that you might expect.
Sure, gamers say that they “love” a particular game, or that they “will win”, but, quite frankly, that sort of talk is usually reserved for newbies. Gamers shift it around a bit and use both win and love as predicate adjectives.
In addition each one indicates a level of appreciation for the subject, with ‘win’ being subjectively less than ‘love’.
Let’s look at some examples:
- Final Fantasy XII is win.
- Vaan’s quickenings are love.
Of course their use can easily be expanded to many, many other situations. “Dark chocolate is love,” is one such instance that comes to mind.
In addition, when writing a statement, such as the one above, gamers will most often substitute “<3″, which represents a heart, for the word “love”. The proper way to write the statement would become, “Dark chocolate is <3″.
It is interesting to note that the opposites, “lose” and “hate”, are not used often used to describe things which are not very good. In those cases, analogies, most often including colorful phrases, are used to express dissatisfaction, and vary based on the degree of discontentment.
Also note how these phrases can easily be rewritten to use “ftw”. For example, “Dark chocolate ftw!”
Remember, learning new words, or even new uses for words that are already familiar, takes practice. Try to work these two into your conversations as often as possible over the course of the week, and pretty soon you’ll be able to Talk Like a Gamer!
