Financial Firm Merrill Lynch has predicted that Microsoft’s XBox 360 will be the clear-cut winner of the next gen console wars. According to their crystal balls, XBox 360 will claim a whopping 50 percent of the console market by 2011, with Sony and Nintendo nearly splitting the other half.
If I had read this story a year ago, I would have laughed. But, it could happen. Sony has priced the PS3 out of a lot of people’s houses, and the Wii’s motion controlled gimmickry may or may not click with all gamers. The 360 is moderately priced, has a big head start, and is starting to draw in more and more game developers (especially if the rumors of MS buying Capcom turn out to be true). Don’t be surprised if these Wall Street nerds got it right.

Microsoft wins no matter who comes out ahead on the console war. If for no other reason than their processors are in all three next-gen consoles. So they’re going to be pulling in cash, hand over fist, no matter what the outcome is.

Microsoft buying Capcom? That makes sense. After all, both companies are known for milking franchises, with scarce little innovation in each installment, until the udder literally crumbles in their hand… (Mega Man and Street Fighter, say hello to MS-DOS and Flight Simulator.)

I haven’t actually looked up the deets, but Jerry, Microsoft processors are in the consoles? I only ask for clarification. I could’ve sworn that the PS3 uses a PowerPC-based Cell processor… I didn’t think MS actually manufactured CPUs… but maybe I’m wrong.
And then again, there’s that whole YellowDog Linux on the PS3, officially sanctioned by Sony, which is kinda cool at first glance. And apparently you can Google for Fedora already being run on the unit. And although I’m messing around with Vista, any big-name corporation that looks like its giving Redmond the single-finger salute is all right by me.
And I’m Sorry, but Ryu piloting a Cessna is just a bad, bad idea. He gets spooked at throws a Hado-ken…
