I said I’d hold off on reviews since Webcomic Idol is the main thing going on right now, but, meh. This one’s too good to just let slip by. Boxer Hockey is a new favorite of mine.
Okay - occasionally when trawling through the web you’ll find some real gem comics - we put together a buch during Webcomic Idol - you’ve seen them by now - but sometimes you’ll find one that really, really takes you by surprise.
I found Boxer Hockey to be everything a humor webcomic should be - great art, great humor, and an independent spirit that is not afraid of crossing any lines of weirdness. (Just look at the cake strip or the kid with cancer strip if you need to know what I’m talking about.) First off, the art; Rittz does absolutely fantastic stuff. The art is rich, bold in its use of color, and the linework is clean and well organized - there’s very little “artistic clutter” that you tend to see in most comics. The character designs themselves are pretty good, though slightly derivative of some other manga-esque work; however, they distinguish themselves enough to be both memorable and recognizable. The best part about the art is that Rittz is very serious about his work, and has shown a great deal of improvement as time progressed. The difference is incredible. The color strips are fantastic - I just hope Rittz sticks with those - even if it causes late updates. The color just makes this comic that much better.
As for the humor - this comic may have one of the most ridiculous premises in all webcomickdom. After the introduction to the game of Boxer Hockey in the first strip, it’s off at a brisk, rapid pace. The jokes are rapid-fire, offensive, and brilliant in most cases. While the character of Rittz may be along the lines of the standard “wacky random guy” type, there is actually a character beneath that initial Mary Sue - you actually take interest in Rittz beyond the “what will he do next” factor.
Overall, this one gets very, very high marks. It’s a smaller archive, but go read it; you will not be sorry.

Now, as for Webcomic Idol, we selected our top ten, and have already gone through the first elimination. Adieu, One Liners, http://www.one-liners.net/ we hardly knew ye. Go vote - but don’t vote for your favorite. This is Survivor style stuff, here. You need to vote your least favorite OUT.
