Flash 9 Beta for Linux Goes Public… Finally
Posted by Devin de Gruyl on Oct 19th, 2006

Adobe has released a beta of Version 9 of their Flash Player for Linux, the first major update in the Linux player under the Adobe regime (indeed, the first update in over two years). Click here for more info and to download.

There’s no installer, so you’ll have to manually put the libflashplayer.so file into your plugins directory (usually /usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/plugins or ~/.firefox/plugins). Fortunately, that seems to be all you need to do. The player works, is stable (despite its beta status), and finally solves some of the playback problems (such as the soundtrack gradually falling out of sync with the video in long animations and YouTube clips) that have defined the Flash experience for years in Linux. I’ve yet to encounter a problem more serious than “minor annoyance” with the plugin - YouTube, Homestar Runner, 4chan’s /f/ board, even Newgrounds all seem to work perfectly for me, for the first time without having to use Microsoft solutions to get to that “perfect” level.

If you use Linux and frequent Flash-heavy websites, it’s absolutely worth a look. At last, one more somewhat large drawback to migrating from Windows seems to have been addressed.
