Last week I gave you all a review of a comic with elaborate black and white art. Let’s try something just a little bit different this week.
Can death incarnate be an adorable, cruel little piggy? You betcha! Death Piglet, by the sick mind of Johan C. Brandstedt takes minimalist art, vibrant colors, and cute characters to glorify the fine art of cartoon death. Death Piglet, who may or not be the animal kingdom’s Grim Reaper, (It’s never stated.) comes up with new ways to end the lives of little furry creatures each and every update. Most of them are pretty clever, and it goes to show you just what a wild mind Brandstedt possesses. This is good news for readers - that’s for damn sure.
What makes this strip stick out is that it forgoes the use of dialogue for strictly visual humor. Not a word is spoken, yet the little stories get across without a problem. I’ve seen comics try this kind of thing before and the end result is a general, “What the hell is going on here?” from the audience. You don’t get that feeling here, mostly because you can predict the end result. Hint - Something usually dies…
Take a look. This one may just spawn waves of avatars for angsty emo kids, but the humor would be too light for them.
