Yesterday, BitTorrent announced agreements with asian hardware manufacturers ASUS, Planex, and QNAP. The companies will release several of their new products with BitTorrent pre-installed. This will cut down the time it takes to download torrents on the hardware.
Warner Bros. also reached an agreement with BitTorrent earlier on in the year that would allow the media giant to distribute its shows and movies using BitTorrent’s technology. More deals are on the way too, around 20 in total. Half of these are with bigger companies and the rest is spread out among smaller studios.
Now for my question. Since BitTorrent is going on the straight and narrow, what does that mean for those who illegally download content? Will they have to go to another open source client instead of the BitTorrent client itself, which I believe is now closed-source? Maybe they’ll straighten up and walk the line themselves, or maybe they’ll just move to a different medium.
We here at Way of the Geek do not encourage or condone online piracy, but this is something you may want to keep under a close eye. Unless, of course, you’re keen on the idea of spending your time in jail. Then, by all means, go about your business.
