It was a good week for comics. A steady crop of decent titles came out, and I’m here to tell you what’s worth a damn and what’s not. Because, as you know, I am the end all authority for my word is law. Ha.
Also, since I am late on this, an abbreviated version of In Stores: Week of 9/27/06
Here we go:
Ion #6: Well, we found out that Kyle Rayner is the ‘Torch Bearer’ for the Guardians, and that apparantly, he is the ‘next generation’ of GL’s. I think it’s only a matter of time before they put him through the Hal Jordan wringer and have him come out dirty as hell, just to get his ass whipped and back to regular GL status saying “Uh…guess I can’t do it”. You know why? Because they cannot top Hal Jordans history. One of craziest super hero histories ever. How often does Superman go nuts and kill everyone? Batman? Wonder Woman? Nope. Just Hal. And they can’t outshine him. No matter what they do with GLs, they cannot compare to the story of Hal Jordan as GL. What they should do is take all those characters, John Stewart/Gardner/Rayner and make them independant of the GLC, and then have their own crazy adventures that make them awesome in their own right. No one said “Man, Dick Grayson way better than batman!” when he was Robin, but when he went to be Nightwing, people took notice. Arsenal is way cooler now that he’s Arsenal and not Speedy. Free these guys from GL status, make them their own. They’ve all done it in the past. Stewart went to the Darkstars, Gardner did that Warrior thing, etc. Don’t try to make them seperate when one character has a thirty year head start in the same vein. But, this Ion line is looking damn good, I just really hate the Guardians, honestly. I dunno. Read it though, GL fans/Rayner fans, it’s still good. I just got off on a rant. Pick it up, it’s a limited run, so it’s easy on your wallet in the long run, or wait for the trade.
DC 52 Week 20: Read it. New Booster Gold, Lobo found God, Supernova=Super Boy?
Flash - The Fastest Man Alive #04: Good issue. Not so much weird Anime-ish art in this one. The Gryphon, Bart Allen’s roomate Griff who recently became endowed with super powers, is acting up way to damn much, and who better than the Flash to knock him back down to earth? Griff’s powers are accelerating his age and corrupting him with Paranoia, so it’s high time he was gone. We find out the Speed Force is now inside Bart, as are the spirits of Wally West and Barry Allen, and Bart has the potential to be the fastest flash that has yet to live with the entirety of the speed force power at his disposal. But is it to much? I like it, you should like it. Regardless of what you think of Bart Allen, try it out.
X-Factor #011: X-Factor is, in my opinion, one of the coolest (if not the coolest) title out on Marvel. It has a very stylized film noir feel to it fueled by the strong depth of what some people consider Marvels second string. However they are over looking the badassery of these heroes and should be hit. Hard. In this issue we see where the leader of Singularity Investigations did indeed kill Jamie Madrox’s parents oh-so many years ago with the use of his (still unknown) mutant powers via a tornado. We also found that he is the one who brainwashed Guido, and we finally make it into the last leg of this adventure in a strange cliffhanger that, if anyone else had written it, wouldn’t seem like a cliffhanger at all. All Marvel fans should read this truely original title.
