The Big Debut Webcomic Review - Horribleville by KC Green
Posted by Sean C on Sep 20th, 2006

Hello all; for those who don’t know me, I’m Sean Conchieri, former artist of the now-dead webcomic Cute Ninja Girls. I also am a member of Bomb Shelter Comics; I have been doing the Newbie Spotlight over there, and Migo recently recruited me to write webcomic reviews here. Now, being an attention whore, I could not resist such an opportunity. Who could, really? My goal is to highlight good webcomics that likely get passed over. Everybody’s heard of Penny Arcade and PvP, but what about the little guys? Some of them are talented, and they deserve some attention, too. I am Sean, bringer of webcomics you’ve never heard of! So, now that the introduction’s over, let’s get this baby rolling!

Our first review is Horribleville by KC Green. It’s an autobiographical comic, which is normally an immediate, “not worth my time” situation; most journal comics are just ego-stroking tripe. However, this is some seriously twisted stuff, and it’s wonderfully wicked. The first thing that really hits you is it’s art style; KC’s got a style that you’d see in MAD Magazine. Not everybody likes that kind of thing, but I’m a sucker for good black and white art, and this is good stuff.

As for the humor, it’s pretty solid and consistent. Granted, not every joke is an instant classic, and some of the jokes are in the “in joke” vein, but some of this stuff is great. Take the most recent strip, for example. The most recent strip, which involves mashed potatoes and the subject of masturbation, is a real winner simply because KC draws the facial expressions on his characters so well. He occasionally gets you thinking, too. There is one standout strip, which involves zombies, (this is the internet, the undead are everywhere) and the writer’s block character makes the observation that he’s never seen a Japanese zombie movie. Hmm, I don’t think I have, either. Really, are there any?

So, bottom line here is that this is a good comic that’s worth your time. Read it, enjoy it - why the hell haven’t you clicked on my link yet!?!

Japanese zombie movie = Wild Zero, yo. Aliens, zombies, MTF transgenders, exploding heads, boobies, and Guitar Wolf…who at one point pulls a katana out of his guitar and cuts the alien mothership in half. All this and a drinking game, too!

      Totally worth seeing.
