Review: Instrument of War by Robert Deas
Posted by Sean C on Sep 25th, 2006

Okay, we’ve got a longform comic here, and the first impression you’ll get from reading this is, “Wow.” The art in this comic is stylized, colorful, and gorgeous despite the fact that it’s just a tad sketchy.

Deas creates a post-apocolyptic Earth (Is there any other kind?) where there are roughly one million human beings left. Targeted by an alien force called the Lineage, humanity faces exinction through vegetation. Seriously - I did not make that up. The idea is pretty damn cool, though, when you read it.

As I stated earlier, the art rocks out loud. Deas has a wonderful color scheme, and the lighting is intense and vibrant. No line details get lost in the colors, either, which I find to be a huge plus. Too many lesser artists try to hide bad linework through color. The art has a manga flavor, but it’s more American in design. The aliens and high tech machinery look great, and the Lineage’s alien ships, despite some questionable design, (Find the panel with the “penis ship” and win a cookie!) have almost an ethereal feel due to the lighting effects.

Bottom line is Instrument of War is worth your time. This thing beats out a lot of professionally published work, and is pretty damn entertaining. Just be prepared; the pages can take some time to load, but the anticipation is worth the wait.
