Nintendo has announced that it is going to release an official MP3 player attachment for its popular DS system (as well as being functional on the GameBoy Advance). The small device plugs into the GBA slot on the bottom of the unit, and uses SD memory cards of up to 2GB to hold your music. It’s expected to retail for close to $40 US.
Before you declare the PSP obsolete and the DS the new multimedia king, there are a few factors to consider. Firstly, the MP3 player will be running on the GBA hardware in the DS, thereby using its rather limited sound system. You’ll have to convert each MP3 file to a *.gbs sound file. During this conversion, the MP3 loses quite a bit of quality, making it sound roughly better than AM radio.
Secondly, for the price, you can buy an “unofficial” multimedia card (Supercard, GBAMP… Google ‘em) that not only offers the same music playback function, but also offers video playback (again, at reduced quality), *.txt file readers, and built in emulators.
