It’s occurred to me that we haven’t had much Mac news on the site, aside from the Week in Geek(WiG) every Friday. So, to offset that, I’ve decided to pull some of the articles from the WiG and let you know about them a day in advance.
On Wednesday, Apple made some highly anticipated, not to mention highly speculated, announcements. Instead of a new iPod, like many people had speculated, Apple announced that its entire iMac line will feature the Intel Core 2 Duo processor in every model. That should boost performace by about 50% over previous iMacs.
On top of that, they announced that they were adding a new member to the iMac family, one boasting a 24-inch display. They also dropped the starting price for iMacs down to $999.
In addition to completely revamping the iMac line, Apple updated their line of Mac mini desktop computers to feature the Core Duo processor at no additional cost. Keep an eye out for the new iMac and Mac mini lineups, they might be worth picking up. Updating the processors like that should help offset their prices, especially since they just dropped them on the iMac.
And lastly, Code Weavers has released a free Mac beta of CrossOver, its implementation of the open source Wine Win32API emulator. This allows users on other operating systems to run Windows applications “as if natively” (to quote the company) without installin Windows itself. The Linux version of this software, has a well-established history while the Mac version is new and still lacking the same capability. Although it does show a lot of promise. Crossover for the Mac has official support for 50 applications. Most applications run with only Silver or Bronze medals, indicating at what “level” the software performs. Only Microsoft Office97 and MS Word/Excel 2000 run at a Gold medal standard. It also seems to be able to handle some games as well. For those of you who miss the software of your Windows days, this is proof that solutions are out there.
Get the beta of CrossOver from http://www.codeweavers.com/ or, for you low-rent folks, you can pick up a copy of WINE from http://www.winehq.com/
