According to the October Issue of Newtype (hitting shelves September 10), four new Evangelion movies are being made. The movies will be a prequel, mid-series movie, sequel, and “final” movie. The first movie, the prequel, is slated to come out in early-Summer ‘07.
While the movies are taking place during the same time frame as the original series, it’s supposed to be an entirely new project, not a remake or improvement of the existing story. They don’t seem to be trying to “reinvent the wheel”. According to Newtype, viewers won’t have had to have seen the series or any previous Evangelion material to understand and enjoy the new movies.
Any fans of Evangelion out there, and you know who you are, can breathe easy. Hideaki Anno, creator of the original Evangelion manga and director of the original series, will write the scenario for the first movie and act as general director and manager for the entire project. So, unless he’s gone crazy like George Lucas, we should be all right.

We are talking about Hideaki Anno, right? What’s this “unless” there, in that case? ;)
