Everyone’s favorite self-loathing, lace-sporting, poetry-writing role-playing system publishers, White Wolf Publishing, just released two new books this week.

They also made an announcement that they were releasing a new genre in 2007. That genre will be Changeling. When asked to describe the latest member to the White Wolf family, Ethan Skemp, creator of the new Changeling game, delivered the following “explanation”.

“Changeling is a game of beauty and cruelty, of passion and loss, of dreams and madness. You have struggled your way back through the thorns only to find your life had been stolen from you. Now you make your way the best you can, attempting to piece together the fragments of your lost life or to forge a new one, chasing your ambition through the intrigues of the changeling courts and freeholds, and always looking over your shoulder lest the Others, the true Fae, return for you.”

Thanks, Ethan, that more than sums it up…now if I could only get you to answer the question. Anyway, for those of you who have played the Changeling game from the previous World of Darkness, before it’s demise, I’m assuming it’ll be much in the same vein. For those of you how haven’t played the earlier shape-shifting creatures, pick up a copy if you can find it. It’s definitely worth a run, and will force you to answer the question of “If you were an animal, what would you be?”

Circle of the Crone is a supplement for Vampire: The Requiem that focuses on a myriad of pagan cults, their religion, culture, and the Circle’s worship of creator goddesses.

It includes the secret powers of the “pagan Damned”, new factions and bloodlines virtually worldwide, new mystic Disciplines, and new blood sorcery rituals.

Here’s a snippet of dialogue from the release article on the official White Wolf site.

“We don’t worship the same gods, you and I,
but we’re more alike than you think.
Together, we are keeping something alive - something that has lived for thousands of years despite the wavering faith of mortal men.
The old gods are not dead. They live within us.
We give them life, warm blood, and they keep us from death.
That’s our covenant, our promise. Everything else is fashion.”
    - Gwenyth the Grey, Acolyte Princess-in-Exile

It’s in stores now. So, if you’re a World of Darkness fan, it could be worth a look.

The Great Pendragon Campaign begins during the reign of King Uther Pendragon, father of the legendary King Arthur and into the great king’s reign. Namely, it covers 80 years, from 485 to 566 in year-by-year detail.

On top of giving you stats for 50 creatures and NPCs, it also contains maps and descriptions of Logres, Cambria. Cornwall, Brittany, Cumbria, the North, Ireland and France as well as maps of the important cities of Britain including Camelot and London.

The material in this book has been created through serious research by the creator, Greg Stafford. He’s quoted in the release article as saying:

“I’ve been working on this book for over 20 years, since the first publication of King Arthur Pendragon. This is the culmination of forty years of research, pleasure and gaming. It’s a tremendous joy to bring my love of the legend all together here.”

Now anyone who has put that much work into a gaming book has really got to know his stuff. I’m very interested in seeing how this one turns out. I couldn’t tell from the preview that White Wolf made available, as it was only an 18 page list of people, places, and events. Still, it sounds like it may have promise.
