Another rundown of comic reviews from yours truly for the week of August, 23.
Daredevil #088: Issue after issue, this title delivers with the force of a hurricane. Since the birth of Volume 2 (after Frank Millers highly legendary run) it has only gotten better. Kevin Smith, Joe Queseda, Brian Michael Bendis, etc. How do you follow these writers? These comic icons? You get Ed Brubaker (Deadenders, highly reccomended read) who has lived up to these names and beyond. I can’t kiss this guys ass enough, man. #088 Covers ‘The Secret Life of Foggy Nelson’ covers why Murdock’s best friend went into hiding. It deals with Foggy Nelson and his living in the governments protective custody, his reasons for being in such a situation, and his efforts to free himself from it. I still recommend Daredevil for anyone who enjoys good super-heroics.
52 Week 16: Renee and No-face are stuck in Kahndaq as Black Adam and Isis gear up for their marriage in this weeks installment, and apparantly the Marvel family is still around. You don’t hear much about Captain Marvel, now in the shadow of his former nemesis, but he’s around, if a bit crazed. An intergang plot, however, could ruin everything. Good issue, I thought, a solid issue where every panel counts, not a few pages of filler here and there. Pick it up, DC readers.
Flash - The Fastest Man Alive #03: The artwork. Oh god the artwork. The scenery is gorgeous, the action lines, the horizons, the backgrounds. Oh man, I like it. But the people…little more to be desired. They all appear to be androgynous half-anime metrosexuals who all seem to be on the verge of weeping at all times. You might as well list the reccomended soundtrack as “Dashboard Confessional”. Oh how it aggrivates. However, I must say, I like the story line that they’re building. Bart Allen and his friend were in an accident in the first issue, which now resulted in his friend, Griff, recieving super powers. However, ‘The Griffon’ doesn’t exactly understand the values, but only sees rewards, for which he’ll do anything to recieve. Solid story, low in numbers, try it out, see if you like it.
Ultimate Spiderman #099: Clone Saga bonanza! Gwen Stacy is back. A clone of Peter Parker is the Scorpion (who is being held by the fantastic four for testing at the moment) another Peter Parker is holding Mary Jane Watson in the ruins of the old Oscorp building, intending to give her the same powers as he has, although he is horridly misfigured by some means. The real Peter Parker is at home in queens where he finds the formerly deceased Gwen Stacy, then greeted by his Aunt May whom he promptly tells he’s spiderman due to the fact that a dead chick is standing two feet to the left and no other way to explain it would be easier. So, then, Peter Parkers father walks in. What the hell. I’ve no idea whats going on, but I kinda like it. Read it anyone and everyone.
Justice League of America #01: A fresh start for the JLA in this new title, written by Brad Meltzer, bringing back the ol’ standard of the Justice League. I actually thought I’d hate it, because I do not believe in the holy DC trinity of Superman/Batman/Wonder Woman. Just because they’re old standards, in my book, does not make them omnipotent. Alas, however, I highly enjoyed this issue as it showed the aforementioned triumvirate discussing who the new members would be, as well as discussing the deceased Red Tornado, and shows the soul of Red Tornado with Boston Brand, debating the idea of returning to life. Old faces and new are being brought in, and I’m actually kind of intrested as to what will go down. At a nice fat fortyish pages makes a solid read for the money, so pick it up, see if you dig it. You’re bound to have at least one favorite DC hero in the mix.
New Avengers #023: Oh what do we do with Jessica Drew? Smack dab in the middle of the Registration act Super Hero civil war, we find Jessica Drew, a.k.a. Spiderwoman, a double agent for both HYDRA and S.H.I.E.L.D., questioning what side of the fence to stand on. As many doubts as I’ve had about this title, it’s really turning around in an amazing way. The panel work alone (see around page fiveish, of actual comic pages, in this issue to see what I mean) is exciting. So, Spiderwoman is promptly captured by S.H.I.E.L.D. and even more quickly is rescued by Hydra, in the one time I thought Hydra kicked ass. So, then we find HYDRA plans its own little civil war and all hell breaks loose instantly as we all sit and wonder “So, who the hell is Jessica Drew again?” though I still enjoyed it. Not a neccesary read or buy, but flip through it when you’re at the comic shop and check out those purdy panels.
That should do me for this week, folks. Catch you later, Bill and Ted.
