DVD problem, solved. You know, it’s amazing the lengths the MPAA will go to in order to control how you use the things you own. Ah well. Yes, this is me tap-dancing around the issue.
Minimal effort was expended today. All the difficult stuff is taken care of. I have my music and my DVD play capability back. I have programs to do everything I did in Windows. Except for the odd fonts, I’m getting used to things. I still miss my Bookmarks in Firefox, but oh well, right?
What I learned today:
* The MPAA can bite me. I paid for the damn DVD, I’m gonna watch it on the platform of my choosing, not your choosing (or lack thereof), you tyrannical bastards!
* AbiWord is awesome. A wonderful light- to middleweight text editor. Between it and OpenOffice I can read all my old writing files. Absolutely excellent.
* RAR support is easy to achieve with unrar.
* PDF support is also easy to achieve.
* Sudoku is addictive. Damn you, KSudoku!
* It’s getting easier not to think those spazzy “OMG I’m in Linux HELP!” thoughts. My comfort level increases every time I realize I can set things up just like I used to have them, and can still keep/use my stuff.
* The Synaptic Package Manager isn’t scary like I first thought it was. It’s easy to use if you have the slightest clue what you want, and even if you don’t, browsing it is simple.
* I can do just about anything I need via GUI methods. That helps my comfort level a lot, even though I’m losing my fear of the command line.
And there you have it. Day Four will likely involve nitpicky non-OS details like trying to remember most of my Firefox bookmarks. Updates may stop coming daily if there’s no OS-learning going on.
