What is it with reboots? I was perusing the solicitations from DC Comics over on Newsarama, and noticed a large number of restarted titles in the past year…
Supergirl #12
The All-New Atom #9
The Blue Bettle #9
Checkmate #8
The Flash: Fastest Man Alive #6
Green Lantern Corps #6
Justice League of America #4 (You know, I’m happy that it’s back with it’s full title instead of just ‘JLA’. I was starting to wonder if DC didn’t want to antagonize people with the ‘of America’.)
The Warlord #10 (…Warlord? Wow. Cue ’80’s flashback.)
Deadman #4
And the Image imprint seems to be going for a reboot of everything…
Wildcats #2
Deathblow #2
Gen13 #2
Wetworks #2
Now the question is, why? DC has it’s reasons for some of these from the fallout of Infinite Crisis, but what’s Image’s excuse? From the writeups on the issues, these aren’t just continuations of the old series, they’re restarting them from the beginning with different creative teams. Why? What was wrong with the old beginnings? Oh, wait…I know. You can make more money with a new #1 than with a reprint. :P You know that’s the only reason here. I’ll also note that all the Image books have two or three different covers, and the only way to get the alternate covers is for the retailers to buy 10 or 50(!) copies of the regular cover. WTF? Didn’t Image learn anything from the Dark Age of the ’90’s when the whole industry almost collapsed due to speculators and retailers grabing every alternate/chromium/plastic/steel cover version that came out? Doesn’t look like it.
On the DC side, I understand why they have so many restarts. Because most of the characters (Blue Bettle, Supergirl, Flash, and Atom) are new people taking up the old mantle. At least we aren’t seeing a dozen different covers for each of those books… >_> (Image, take note.)
