Despite speculation and reports to the contrary, Apple’s open source development is still alive and kicking.
On Monday Ernest Prabhakar, Apple Open Source Product Manager, posted an email on its Darwin-dev mailing list saying the following:
As of today, we are posting buildable kernel sources for Intel-based Macs alongside the usual PowerPC (and other Intel) sources, starting with Mac OS X 10.4.7. We regret the delay in readying the new kernel for release, and thank you for your patience.
Whether or not the large outcry heard throughout the Mac community played a part in the “return” of open source support is unknown. It doesn’t stop with kernel sources, though.
Prabhakar also mentioned Mac OS Forge, a new community web site hosted by Apple. Presently, it serves as a host for the projects mentioned in the previously mentioned email and those looking to transfer from the now defunct OpenDarwin.org. It is, however, expected to grow much larger in the future.
It’s good to see that Apple is still supporting open source, although I’m not sure if that was their idea or a response from the disappointment of their community.
